Barrie-John Elcoat is our School Counsellor and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Lead at Peterhouse School.
At Peterhouse School we recognise that early intervention has a greater impact on children’s and young people’s lives. Our pupils, some of whom will struggle with their mental health at times, benefit from having access to an on-site Counsellor that can provide prompt therapeutic and emotional support. As well as work in school Barrie is accessible in his role to all Flexible Education pupils.
Barrie is a fully qualified Person-Centred Counsellor (MBACP Registered) with specialist experience in Autism. Barrie is committed to helping our pupils explore their own issues and help them make sense of things in ways that are beneficial. Barrie has completed specific training around working ethically with children and young people, working with risk, work with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and work with trauma including Children’s Accelerated Trauma Technique (CATT).
Counselling sessions are not limited to the indoor therapy room and, subject to the individual pupil’s need, can be moved outside of school if considered beneficial, e.g. walk and talk therapy. Pupil led sessions will frequently be supported by a personalised therapeutic activity such as Lego, art and crafts and Radio Controlled Car/ Vehicle operation and maintenance.
As a school based Counsellor Barrie can provide a service that is accessible to pupils throughout their school life and Barrie’s relationship with pupils will develop as they mature. Barrie will also support pupils with their understanding of referral and transition to other mental health support services if required, e.g. CAMHS and external Counselling provision.
